Frequently Asked Questions

A Texas sales tax holiday is a limited period when certain qualifying products can be purchased without paying Texas state and local sales tax. Each holiday has its own dates, product requirements and price limits.

Texas has four annual tax holidays:

Emergency Preparedness Supplies in April

ENERGY STAR products during Memorial Day weekend

Water-efficient products during Memorial Day weekend

Back-to-school products in August

Official 2027, dates are pending. TexasTaxSaleHoliday.com will update the dates after they are confirmed by the Texas Comptroller. Subscribe to our free newsletter to receive new dates, reminders and resource updates.

Qualifying products depend on the specific holiday. For the back-to-school holiday, most qualifying products are clothing, footwear, student backpacks, and specifically listed school supplies and must be priced under $100 per item.

Always check the Texas Comptroller’s official tax-holiday guidance before purchasing.

Yes. Qualifying purchases may generally be made online, by telephone, by mail or in a store. Payment and purchase timing must meet the rules for that holiday.

Complete online orders before the deadline, make sure saved payment information is current and remember that shipping or handling charges can affect an item’s qualifying price.

First, confirm that the product, price and purchase timing met the official requirements. Then contact the seller and request a refund.

If the seller does not issue the refund, it may provide a signed Form 00-985, Assignment of Right to Refund, which may allow you to file a claim with the Texas Comptroller. Review the official Sales Tax Refund information for instructions.
